The degree must include courses equalling at least 1 - 1 1/2 years of full-time studies in a subject relevant to that of the programme applied for.
At least 2nd Class, Upper Division/B, or the equivalent is normally required to be considered for admission.
Please note that some Master's degree programmes may have additional admission requirements specific to their programme. Please refer to the website of each programme for more information.
English language proficiency
A documented proficiency in English is required for admission.
Financial requirements
Applicants who are not EU/EEA citizens must provide documentation of financing.
Please note that some programmmes are not offered every year.
New students are admitted every second year to the programmes in Health Promotion and Anthropology of Development (2012, 2014, etc) and Gender and Development (2011, 2013, etc).

Non-native English speakers must document their English language proficiency in order to be considered for admission to Master's degree programmes at the University of Bergen.

- Transcript of records (an official statement listing courses/subjects you have completed at your university)
- University degree certificate(s)/diploma(s)
- Documentation of English language proficiency
- Relevant work experience (if applicable)
- Personal statement (your motivation for applying)
- Recommendation letter(s)/references (personal statement from academic adviser/employer or equivalent)
- Documentation of financing (non EU/EEA applicants)
- Copy of your passport showing full name, date of birth, and photograph
- Specific requirements for the programme(s) applied for (some Master's programmes may have additional admission requirements specific to their programme)
Insufficient information/documentation
Please note that you will not be considered for admission if:- You have not given sufficient information as to your academic background
- You do not provide satisfactory documentation of the financing of your studies
- Your application is not postmarked by the given deadline

Offer of Admission
By the middle of April- Student Services e-mails and sends Letters of Acceptance to accepted applicants.
- We will also e-mail all applicants who are not offered admission by the end of April.
Acceptance of the Offer of Admission
By 1 May- Accepted applicants return the form “Declaration - Confirmation of Acceptance” by fax (+47 55 58 90 25) or e-mail (master@uib.no) to accept the offer of admission.

Documentation of financing
The University of Bergen is a publicly funded state university, and therefore has no tuition fees, however, self-financing applicants must have financial means to cover living expenses during their stay in Norway, which amounts to NOK 90.800 for the academic year 2011/2012 (10 months).Applicants who are not EU/EEA citizens must enclose proof of sufficient financing (a minimum of NOK 90.800 for the academic year 2011/2012) with their application to the University of Bergen. Applicants who cannot submit such documentation will not be considered for admission, regardless of academic qualifications.
Valid forms of documentation:
- Financing provided by applicant: Enclose a recent bank statement in your name showing possession of the required amount
- Financing provided by sponsor: Enclose a letter from the sponsor(s) that they are willing to transfer the required amount if you are admitted, in addition to a recent bank statement in your sponsor’s name showing possession of the required amount
Residence permit and financing
Once admitted, students/sponsors must transfer money into a deposit account established by the Student Welfare Organisation (SiB) with a bank in Bergen. When the money has been deposited you will receive a confirmation of the deposit/receipt issued by the bank. This confirmation/receipt is one of the required documents which must be enclosed with the application for a residence permit.Please visit the website of the Norwegian Directorate of Immigration (UDI) for more information regarding the requirements for the residence permit.
